The judging has ended and Newsweek’s Simon Barnett, Director of Photography, selected three winners from the top 50 images. The Grand Prize winner – Sunny Atrim – has been awarded $7,000 and a trip to New York City for a private photo tutorial and tour of Newsweek’s Photo Department with Simon Barnett. First and second runners-up receive $6,000 and $5,000.

All winning photos will be featured on Capital One's Image CardSM site --www.capitalone.com/imagecard-- where Capital One cardholders can create a card that’s distinctly theirs using an image or photo of their own or a winning “American Life” moment.

THE WINNERS

GRAND-PRIZE WINNER

Sunny Antrim

Sunny, a resident of New York City, celebrated her 30th birthday with a trip to Alaska. There, she encountered two young bears playing together and snapped the winning photo! For Sunny, “Not only does this photo depict the beautiful wildlife in Alaska, but it reminds me of the beginning of my love affair with photography.”

“The winning entry is an exciting and joyful wildlife photograph. The moment, where the bears make eye contact with each other, as the splashing water is frozen, makes for an image that you can’t help but be drawn to, and one that inevitably makes one smile at the wonder of nature.”

FIRST RUNNER-UP

Perri Hart

A quiet, comfortable porch at a small country store in upstate New York inspired Perri’s winning shot. She says, “Hunting, fishing, plumbing, hardware, health aids and cold cuts. In America you can have it all, and the shadow of a banner resting across the wall notes the most important thing, Freedom!”

“The uniquely American porch, gloriously pictured here in the gentle sunlight of upstate New York. This strong black and white picture, with the shadow casting 'freedom' over the wall, is a wonderful metaphor for America as home.”

SECOND RUNNER-UP

Deana Barrett

To Deana, American Life means merging modern and traditional ideas of family. She and her sister work full time and are full time mothers to each other’s children. Deana believes, “This photo shows the love of having those traditional bonds in a modern world. They are truly best friends and look out for one another.”

“This photograph of two happy children is an uplifting image of early friendship. In viewing this well-composed, perfectly timed moment, one can’t help but think back to the strength of some of our own budding friendships that have lasted a lifetime.”
